Mikey Dread (b. Michael Campbell in 1954, Port Antonio, Jamaica) came to prominence in the 70's with his weekly radio show on JBC (Jamaican Broadcasting Company) where he had a four hour show called Dread At The Controls. It was groundbreaking in that he not only played Jamaican music (something that wasn't common at all those times) but also the hottest new singles in just matters of days and often hours after they were pressed. Mikey Dread also paid tribute to the music roots and would often play the original cuts of rhythms that were popular at the dancehalls of the time. Also as groundbreaking was Mikey Dread jingles that he recorded at King Tubby's studio. In 1979 he stopped to play at the radio station since Mikey had tired of the constant troubles surrounding the show at the station.
After leaving JBC Mikey Dread was employed at Treasure Isle as an engineer. Soon enough he started producing music himself and by the end of the year he had launched his own label, Dread At The Controls.
