Originally known as Prince Jammy (b Lloyd James in 1947, Montego Bay, Jamaica) started out as an engineering apprentice to the dub pioneer King Tubby in 1976, replacing Pat Kelly and Phillip Smart. The latter had moved on to New York.
In 1977 Prince Jammy also started producing music. The first song being »Born Free« by Black Uhuru, the rhythm he got from Yabby You. Bunny Lee was so impressed with Jammys engineering that he used him almost exclusively during these first years. In 1977 Jammy produced his first entire album, Black Uhurus Love Crisis which proved to be a break through for both the producer and the group.
In the beginning of the 80's Jammy started releasing records for Greensleeves, one being a fictional clash between him, King Tubby and another of Tubbys apprentices, Scientist: The Big Showdown.
In 1985 Jammy released »Under mi Sleng Teng« by Wayne Smith which was the definition of a new era in reggae, the digital dance hall. The song was first played on a clash between King Jammy's Super Power and Black Scorpio the 23rd of february in 1985. King Jammy's Super Power were the winners of the legendary clash.
