Java

History

The first recording of Java was produced in '69 by Clive Chin and had Dennis Wright singing over the rhythm. Clive Ching however wasn't satisfied with the result and he asked his friend Augustus Pablo to play on it. The result was the song Java which was a massive success that also would launch Pablo's career. The record included supporting vocals by The Chosen Few. The b-side of the record featured Java Version - a totally different take by Pablo.

The success of the song encouraged Clive Chin to use the rhythm for more cuts with artists such as Tommy McCook, Dennis Alcapone, Bongo Herman. The singles were followed by an album simply called Java Java Java Java - one of the earliest Dub albums.

Versions

There were two early recuts of the rhythm done by Prince Buster (Java and Science) and also at Studio One (by Cedric Im Brooks and The Invaders). In 2003 the rhythm was recut by Bobby Digital with songs by artists such as Bushman, Sizzla, Morgan Heritage.
