Biography

Billy Boyo (born Billy Theophilus Rowe, September 21, 1969) was probably the most prolific of the early dance hall era child deejays. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica but soon moved to Brooklyn, New York. He had his greatest success with Junjo Lawes, who was married to his sister Rosemarie, and he was also mainly responsible for getting the youth in a recording studio. In 1982 Greensleeves released the album DJ Clash Volume Two where Billy was chatting against fellow child deejay Little Harry. They where both interviewed in the book Reggae Inna Dance Hall Style. In the early 80's there would also circulate a rumour that the two child deejays had been shot and killed. A rumour entirely untrue.

In 1983 Boyo went to London and recorded an album for Silver Camel and his eponymous label. The album, with the title Zim Zim, was posthumously released in 2002 on the Camels revamped Silver Kamel imprint.

Billy died of a brain tumor on October 29th 2000 after a two month long struggle to beat the disease.
